1. Lighting
Switch off the lights when you leave the room. Lighting accounts for about 15-25 % of the average hotel electricity consumption. Switching off unnecessary lights helps to cut down the electricity consumption.
2. Shower
Save water. Turn off the tap while shampooing and you can save up to 15-20 liters of water each time you shower. In one year this means about 5 500 - 7 300 liters of water if you take a shower each day. When 100 customers do the same, it saves up to 550 000 - 730 000 liters of water each year. In addition, taking a shower instead of a bath uses five times less water.
3. Towels
If possible, use your towel more than once. Creating less laundry helps to minimize the usage of both water and electricity. If you would use your towel twice instead of once, it would reduce the amount of laundry by 0.5 kilos a night and in one year it would mean 190 kilos less laundry. If 100 customers would do the same, it would mean a reduction of about 19 000 kilos laundry each year.
4. Waste
Sort waste when possible. Transporting waste to the dump and disposing of waste generates for example carbon dioxide and methane emissions. Recycling and re-using reduces the climate impact of waste.
5. TV
When you are finished watching TV, turn it off directly from the device in order to save electricity. Avoid stand-by modes in all electric devises. Stand-by mode in electric devises can account for about 10 % of the total consumption of electricity in the hotel room.
6. Air conditioning
If the air conditioning in the room is running, keep the windows closed. This way the room will get cooler faster and energy will be saved as the air conditioning works effectively and more hot air does not get into the room.
7. Sheets
If your stay at the hotel lasts for more than one night, you can ask that the sheets would not be changed each day. In a middle sized hotel the amount of laundry is about 200 000 - 300 000 kilos per year. Sheets are a big part of the laundry generated in the hotels.
8. Heating
Try to keep the room temperature reasonable. According to research the best temperature for a good night's sleep is about 18-20 degrees Celsius.
9. Key holder
Lights and electricty will be activated when the room key is placed in the key holder.
